What to Know Before Buying a Camper Battery
Choosing the right camper battery is essential to keep your RV powered and your adventures stress-free. Here’s everything you need to know to pick the best battery for your setup.
🔋 AGM, Gel or Lithium?
AGM and Gel deep cycle batteries are more advanced than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. They’re maintenance-free, sealed, and vibration-resistant — perfect for campers that frequently drive off-road. If you’re using a solar panel, a Gel battery could be the better choice. For long-term durability and lighter weight, lithium batteries are the top pick — especially for full-time vanlifers or boondockers.

For AGM and Gel batteries, weight can indicate quality — heavier batteries typically use thicker lead plates, which last longer. Unlike starter batteries that deliver quick bursts through thin lead plates, your deep cycle battery needs to handle continuous loads. Never use a starter battery as your main camper battery.

Battery capacity is often rated with a “C value” that indicates the number of hours over which the battery is discharged during testing. A battery rated at C100 (100 hours) will show a higher amp-hour number than one rated at C20 (20 hours), even if the actual usable energy is similar. For camping, always check the C20 rating, which is a more realistic indicator of usable capacity for RV use. C100 ratings are more common with solar garden or electric fence batteries and don’t reflect real-world camper needs.

Charging your camper battery through the vehicle alternator alone is not enough. Without a proper DC-DC charger (also called a battery-to-battery booster), the battery will never be fully charged – significantly reducing its lifespan.
